The historical context

Gua Sha has deep roots in Chinese culture and medicine, which emphasize the importance of the flow of energy, or ‘Qi’ (pronounced ‘Chi’), in maintaining health. When energy is blocked or stagnant, this can lead to pain, illness or other health problems. Gua Sha was originally used as a form of holistic healing to relieve a wide range of conditions, including muscle pain, headaches, breathing problems and more.

The technique

Gua Sha is practiced with tools made from a variety of materials, such as jade, rose quartz or even buffalo horn. The most popular form of Gua Sha among modern practitioners is facial Gua Sha, which targets the face to promote lymphatic drainage and increase blood circulation.

Preparation: The skin must be clean, and some practitioners recommend using a facial oil or serum to help the tool glide over the skin.

Scraping: The tool is held at an angle of 15 to 30 degrees to the skin and glided along the surface with gentle pressure. Areas commonly targeted during Gua Sha include the back, face, head and lower limbs.

Technique: In general, long, gentle movements are used, moving up and down. The number of repetitions may vary according to personal preference and the area being treated.

Post-Session Care: After the session, it is common to notice temporary redness due to increased blood flow, and there may be slight tenderness, but excessive bruising is not typical if the technique is carried out correctly.

The benefits

Many potential benefits of Gua Sha have been reported, including :

The scraping movement stimulates blood circulation and promotes the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the skin.

Helps reduce puffiness, particularly under the eyes, by promoting lymphatic drainage, which can eliminate toxins and excess fluid.

For Gua Sha on the body, the technique can help relieve muscle tension and pain by breaking down stagnation in muscles and connective tissue.

Guasha helps to bring about an effect of letting go that is instantaneous following the session.

The procedure can be soothing and often leads to a feeling of relaxation, similar to that of a massage.
