The principles of moxibustion
Vital energy (Qi): Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the notion that physical and mental well-being derives from a harmonious balance of Qi in the body. Moxibustion aims to stimulate and direct this Qi, particularly in cases where the body is deemed to be out of balance or weakened.
Blood circulation: By warming acupuncture points or specific areas, moxibustion can help to improve blood circulation and relax muscles.

Types of Moxibustion
Direct moxibustion: This technique involves the direct application of plant material to the skin. Sometimes, a moxa cone is placed directly on an acupuncture point and then lit. The cone burns slowly, releasing heat. A small protector is used to avoid burning the skin.
Indirect moxibustion: In this method, the moxa is placed on a support, such as a stick or cone, and held a few centimeters from the surface of the skin, allowing the heat to penetrate without direct contact. This can also be done on acupuncture needles that have already been inserted (moxibustion combined with acupuncture).
